Evita
Evita traces the rise of Eva Peron from modest beginnings to her position as First Lady of Argentina.
Told largely through song, the musical explores ambition, celebrity, politics and the sharply divided public response to one of Argentina’s most famous figures.
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, Evita began as a concept album before reaching the West End in 1978. The original Broadway production opened in 1979 under director Harold Prince and won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Its songs include “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “Oh What a Circus.”
A new Broadway revival, directed by Jamie Lloyd, is scheduled to open at the Winter Garden Theatre on March 25, 2027. The production follows Lloyd’s acclaimed London staging and marks Evita’s third Broadway production, after the original and a 2012 revival.
The musical was adapted into a 1996 film directed by Alan Parker. The film received five Academy Award nominations, winning Best Original Song for “You Must Love Me,” written specially for the screen by Lloyd Webber and Rice.
