Hadestown
Hadestown retells two ancient Greek myths, the love story of Orpheus and Eurydice and the troubled marriage of Hades and Persephone. Set in a dreamlike world shaped by poverty, industry and the changing seasons, the musical follows Orpheus as he journeys into the underworld in an attempt to bring Eurydice home.
The musical has music, lyrics and a book by singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell. It began as a small theatre project in Vermont and later became a 2010 concept album. Director Rachel Chavkin helped develop it for the stage, with the musical reaching New York Theatre Workshop in 2016 and London’s National Theatre in 2018 before transferring to Broadway.
Hadestown opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17, 2019. Its folk and jazz-influenced score, atmospheric staging and distinctive retelling of mythology earned major acclaim. The production received 14 Tony Award nominations and won eight, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Direction of a Musical. It also won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
