A much loved teen movie is getting the Broadway musical move, and we already have the date circled.
The show is 10 Things I Hate About You, which will begin Broadway shows on August 17, 2027, exactly one year from today.
Us fans are heading back to Padua High, where two sisters try to work out who they are while everyone around them thinks they know better.
The new musical is based on the 1999 Touchstone Pictures film written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith.
Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang have written the book for the stage show while Carly Rae Jepsen and Ethan Gruska are writing the music and lyrics.
Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph, with Tom Kitt also on board as musical director.
However casting is to be announced.
The story will keep the heart of the film, with school crushes and strict rules sitting under a bigger tale about growing up on your own terms.
10 Things I Hate About You was itself a fresh take on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, first staged back in 1594.
The 1999 film became a box office hit and later turned into one of those movies people kept passing on to friends.
It also helped bring Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Heath Ledger to a much wider crowd.
Ledger’s cover of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” is still one of the film’s most loved scenes, so we know people will be watching closely to see how the stage show handles it.
