A new musical built around the wild and witty catalog of Weird Al Yankovic is officially in the works.

Dare to Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical is set to bring the polka parody master’s greatest hits to the stage.

Tony Award-winning director Alex Timbers – who previously brought Moulin Rouge! and Beetlejuice to the stage – is attached to direct.

The book comes from the Tony-nominated writing duo Scott Brown and Anthony King, who previously worked on Gutenberg! The Musical! and Beetlejuice, along with Yankovic himself.

The show promises to deliver Weird Al’s signature musical spoofs that have taken over the airwaves for four decades, poking fun at pop, rock, rap and more.

It seems as though we can expect classics like White & Nerdy, Amish Paradise, Eat It, Smells Like Nirvana, and Like a Surgeon.

Weird Al – who spoke in 2024 about his Broadway ambitions – quipped: “Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community

“Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it’s ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,’ and I think this musical should fix that problem immediately.”

Timbers added: “It’s a dream come true to work with one of my comedy heroes bringing an original story set to his beloved songbook to the stage.

“What Al, Anthony, and Scott are creating is unexpected, subversive, meta, and hilarious and I can’t wait for the world to experience it.”

More news on casting, production dates, and creative details for Dare to Be Stupid are on the way soon.

Stay tuned; this one’s sure to be a unique ride on the Broadway stage.
