A legendary theatre star has confirmed that one of his most famous roles is finally coming to an end after more than a decade on stage.
Alfie Boe has announced that he is retiring from playing Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, telling audiences during a performance of the show’s World Tour in London that these are his “final performances of the show” in the iconic role.
Speaking to the crowd, Boe reflected on his long connection to the musical, saying: “Tonight is a real celebration of everybody that has been involved in Les Misérables. I’m coming to my end of my time with the show.”
The performer revealed that he has been playing Jean Valjean for 16 years and feels the moment has come to move on, adding: “I’m feeling it’s time to hand it over to younger people with less grey hair in their beards.”
Boe has become one of the defining faces of Les Misérables, appearing in productions, concerts and special events around the world while bringing the beloved character to life for countless audiences.
He first took on the role duirng a concert performance of the musical at the O2 Arena in London to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the show.
Boe was cast after being spotted by producer Cameron Mackintosh performing alongside Michael Ball in the English National Opera production of Kismet.

He went on to perform the role in the West End, on Broadway and as part of an all star staged concert in 2019.
His final appearances as Jean Valjean are expected to take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York this July.
