Annie Is Returning To Broadway For A 50th Anniversary Revival
One of Broadway’s most famous musicals is heading back to New York for a major milestone, with a brand-new production planned to celebrate 50 years since the show first became a Broadway favorite.
Annie will return to Broadway in fall 2027 for its 50th Anniversary revival, with Tony Award winner Sam Pinkleton set to direct following his acclaimed work on Oh, Mary! and his involvement with The Rocky Horror Show.
Casting and exact dates for the new Broadway production haven’t been announced yet, so us Annie fans will have to wait a little longer to discover who’ll be playing the title character and iconic Miss Hannigan.
The revival will mark half a century since Annie opened at Broadway’s Alvin Theatre, now known as the Neil Simon Theatre, on 21 April 1977 after earlier performances at Goodspeed Opera House and a pre-Broadway engagement in Washington, D.C.
Featuring music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin, with a book by Thomas Meehan, Annie went on to become one of Broadway’s best-known family musicals and won seven Tony Awards from 11 nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
New York audiences most recently saw Annie in 2024 when the national tour played Madison Square Garden with Whoopi Goldberg as Miss Hannigan, while another anniversary production directed by original Broadway cast member Jenn Thompson is heading to Goodspeed ahead of the Broadway revival.
