Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey Set for Sunday in the Park With George Revival

Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey on set of Wicked together

Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey are in early talks to take on George and Dot in a new London revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Sunday in the Park With George.

If plans stick, the duo will reunite at London’s Barbican Theatre for a summer 2027 run of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, helmed by acclaimed director Marianne Elliott.

Per Deadline, all parties are “cautiously optimistic” about the production moving forward, but with the summer 2027 target still over 18 months away, the pieces remain in early motion.

Grande and Bailey have spent the last few years working closely on the highly anticipated Wicked films, where fans will recognize Ariana as Glinda and Jonathan as Fiyero.

If confirmed, this production would also mark a notable reunion between Bailey and Marianne Elliott, who previously collaborated on her acclaimed version of Company at the Gielgud Theatre in 2018.

Sunday in the Park With George draws its inspiration from Georges Seurat’s famous pointillist painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

The musical tells the imagined stories behind the people resting on the riverbank as Seurat creates his masterpiece, exploring the balance between art and life.

The roles of George and Dot were originated on Broadway by Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, with Philip Quast and Maria Friedman introducing the characters in London’s National Theatre production, which went on to win the Olivier for Best New Musical.

A previous Broadway revival with Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford had been set for a West End transfer in 2020 but was cancelled due to the pandemic.
