A major Broadway return has hit a delay, and we are now waiting a little longer for one of musical theatre’s biggest titles to land back in New York.
Dreamgirls had been set for a fall 2026 revival, but the team behind it says the plan has changed while the pieces come together.
The long loved musical about a Black 1960s girl group chasing fame while the cost of the spotlight keeps getting higher was last seen on Broadway almost 40 years ago.
Producers told People: “The new Broadway production of Dreamgirls, directed and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, is absolutely moving forward.”
That means the fall 2026 plan is off for now, even though the Broadway return is still in the works.
We do not have casting yet, and the theatre has not been named.
New dates have not been set.
Dreamgirls first opened on Broadway in 1981, with music by Henry Krieger and book and lyrics by Tom Eyen.
The show is loosely shaped by the rise of groups like The Supremes and The Shirelles.
The story is known for its huge sound and its look at how a young group changes as the music world pulls them in new directions.
Jennifer Holliday became a Broadway name as Effie White, with “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” turning into one of the show’s best known songs.
The first Broadway cast also included Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine and Obba Babatunde.
Camille A. Brown is set to direct and choreograph the new staging.
Michael Bennett staged the original production, and a national tour brought the show back to Broadway in 1987.
A 2016 West End version led by Casey Nicholaw was once expected to move to Broadway, but that did not happen.
Many fans also know Dreamgirls from the 2006 movie, where Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar as Effie and Beyonce appeared as Deena.
