A major musical could be preparing for a long-awaited London comeback with a new summer production lined up for 2027.

Dreamgirls is reportedly expected to open at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre nextyear, marking the musical’s first London revival since its original West End production finished at the Savoy Theatre in 2019.

Official confirmation of the production including dates is expected soon.

The Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical follows Effie and Deena alongside Lorrell, three young singers trying to make their names during the changing American music scene of the 1960s, with their growing success putting their friendship under increasing pressure.

Dreamgirls features music by Henry Krieger with a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen, and its score has become a huge part of the show’s lasting appeal, with And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going alongside One Night Only among its best-known numbers; I Am Changing and Listen are also featured in the musical.

The show first opened on Broadway in 1981 and went on to become one of the biggest shows of its era.

Its original production won six Tony Awards and ran for more than 1,500 performances, while Dreamgirls later reached an even wider audience through its 2006 movie adaptation before finally receiving its West End premiere in 2016, where Amber Riley’s performance as Effie White earned her an Olivier Award.

A London return would come at an interesting time for Dreamgirls, as a separate Broadway revival had recently been in development with Camille A. Brown directing and choreographing, with plans originally pointing towards a return to New York during 2026.

Those Broadway plans have since been postponed, with the Broadway revival yet to announce exact dates.
