Sara Bareilles isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Amidst the whirlwind of trying to write a new album, a new season of Girls5Eva, the Waitress composer is also diving headfirst into an exciting new project: a new musical adaptation of Meg Wolitzer’s novel The Interestings.
Collaborating with playwright Sarah Ruhl, Bareilles is bringing to life the story of a group of friends who meet at an arts summer camp and continue their journey from their teenage years all the way into middle age.
If this sounds a bit familiar, you’re not wrong. Bareilles admits there’s a thematic thread connecting The Interestings with her previous works like Girls5Eva and Waitress.
You can get a first listen to the song ‘Enough’ from the show below…
The lyrics reveal the struggles of a character who, despite her outward success, is plagued by a feeling of never truly being satisfied.
Discussing the musical, Bareilles told Playbill: “It’s this idea that emerged in [the Waitress anthem] ‘She Used to Be Mine,’ where you’re really trying to reconcile the person you became with the person you thought you would become.
“And I just think, for everyone, there’s a chasm between those two people… But I find that to be fascinating. I’ve always been someone who really loved the idea of the child in you that never really goes away.”
So far The Interestings has had a few private readings. There’s no word yet on when the show will first hit the stage.
