A New Guys and Dolls Movie Musical is Finally Happening

Guys and Dolls original film title

After years of delays, the beloved Frank Loesser musical Guys and Dolls is on its way to the big screen again, and this time it’s in the hands of Oscar-winning director Rob Marshall.

Marshall, the mastermind behind Chicago and Into the Woods, has teamed up with producer John DeLuca and the screenwriting duo John Requa and Glenn Ficarra for this new film adaptation, set to be produced by TriStar Pictures (via Deadline).

First hitting Broadway in 1950, Guys and Dolls is a staple of musical theatre.

Based on the stories of Damon Runyon, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, the show ran for 1,200 performances in its initial run, cementing its place as a classic.

The original cast included Robert Alda as the charming Sky Masterson, Isabel Bigley as the missionary Sarah Brown, Sam Levene as the scheming Nathan Detroit, and Vivian Blaine as the ever-lovable Miss Adelaide.

The 1955 film adaptation brought the story to a new audience, with Blaine reprising her role as Adelaide, and Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, and Frank Sinatra rounding out the main cast.

Since then, Guys and Dolls has been revived countless times on stage, most recently in a new immersive production at London’s Bridge Theatre.
