The National Theatre has revealed plans to stage the UK premiere of Here We Are, Stephen Sondheim’s final musical, as part of artistic director Rufus Norris’ final season.
With a score by the legendary Sondheim and a book by acclaimed playwright David Ives, Here We Are made its world premiere Off-Broadway in 2023.
The show will run at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre from 23 April to 28 June 2025, with tickets available to the public from 16 October 2024.
The new London production will be helmed by Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello, with choreography by Sam Pinkleton.
Inspired by the surreal films The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel by Luis Buñuel, Here We Are follows a group of dinner party guests who find themselves mysteriously unable to leave.
Making the leap across the Atlantic for this UK premiere will be Tracie Bennett and Denis O’Hare. Joining the cast will be British actor Rory Kinnear. Further casting is to be announced.
The creative team includes set and costume designer David Zinn, choreographer Sam Pinkleton, orchestrations Jonathan Tunick, additional arrangements Alexander Gemignani, conductor Nigel Lilley, lighting designer Natasha Katz, sound designer Tom Gibbons and casting director Bryony Jarvis-Taylor.
