The Phantom of the Opera is making a comeback in New York in a new immersive format.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has confirmed previous rumours, stating in a new interview that the production will open off-Broadway later in 2025.

Last year a job posting had first revealed the plans. The project, then titled ‘Untitled Immersive Musical Attraction,’ is set to begin rehearsals in January.

The first preview is slated for March 15, 2025, with an open-ended run at 218 West 57th Street – a New York City landmark.

Planning documents show intentions to refurbish the building, including creation of a roof-top graveyard.

Meanwhile, a newly published website is inviting people to sign up to a mailing list.

Further details about the production are to be announced.

The new show follows the recent reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, currently running off-Broadway as Cats: The Jellicle Ball.

Widely regarded as one of the most stunning productions in history, The Phantom of the Opera boasts Webber’s romantic and haunting score.

Featuring classics like The Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, Masquerade, and the title song, it tells the story of a disfigured musical genius haunting the Paris Opera House.

Phantom’s original Broadway run started previews at the Majestic Theatre on January 9, 1988, and officially opened on January 26, 1988, starring Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, and Steve Barton.

The production closed in April 2023. With more than 13,000 performances it’s the longest running musical in Broadway history.

The West End run continues at His Majesty’s Theatre.
