A stage musical adaptation of Music & Lyrics is officially in development.
The beloved 2007 rom-com, which starred Hugh Grant as a washed-up ‘80s pop star and Drew Barrymore as a quirky lyricist, is being reimagined for the stage by the film’s original writer and director, Marc Lawrence.
The project is being developed by TRW Production, a new producing entity led by Michael McFadden and Katy Lipson.
The story follows Alex Fletcher, a former chart-topper who’s given a shot at a comeback when he’s asked to write a song for a current teen idol. The only problem is, he’s never been great with lyrics.
Enter Sophie, a woman with a talent for words but no experience in the music industry. Together, they find a creative spark—and maybe something more.
We’re expecting to be hearing some of the original songs, such as the catchy “PoP! Goes My Heart,” live on stage.
