Rachel Zegler has topped the UK’s Official Vinyl Singles Chart with her rendition of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina while starring as Eva Perón in the West End’s Evita.
The 24-year-old star was “freaking out” when the Official Charts Company broke the news in her London Palladium dressing room, telling them, “This feels incorrect, but I trust you… It’s so cool under the list of things I never thought would happen in my life – charting in music”.
The track, available on streaming, download, and 7″ vinyl, also tops the UK Physical Singles Chart, making it the country’s biggest-selling single across all formats this week.
The release features a bonus live balcony recording, dubbed “the theatrical moment of the summer”, which has gone viral worldwide.
Zegler quipped her first Official Chart award would sit “next to the Golden Globe” at home.
Don’t Cry For Me Argentina has a long history in the charts.
Julie Covington’s original hit reached Number 1 in 1977, Madonna’s 1996 film version hit Number 3, and covers by The Shadows, The Mike Flowers Pops, and even the Glee cast have all made UK chart appearances.
