Sara Bareilles is set to bring her new musical The Interestings, adapted from Meg Wolitzer’s acclaimed novel, to the stage for the first time.

The show will premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in early 2027 as part of Berkeley Rep’s 2026-2027 season, with previews starting January 31 and opening night set for February 17.

The Interestings is getting an all-star creative team.

Alongside Waitress composer, lyricist, and star Sara Bareilles, Pulitzer finalist Sarah Ruhl will co-write the script, joined by Meg Wolitzer herself.

Michael Arden, a two-time Tony Award-winning director, is set to helm the production, with musical supervision from Nadia DiGiallonardo.

Bareilles says she was drawn to Wolitzer’s story right away. She explains, “When I read Meg Wolitzer’s unbelievably funny and poignant novel, The Interestings, I wrote the first song before I’d finished the book.”

Wolitzer’s story follows six teenagers who meet at summer camp in the 1970s, bonding over dreams for creative futures.

As adults in New York City, they wrestle with careers, relationships and the realities of friendship over time.

We can expect more details about the cast and additional creative collaborators in coming months.

Sara Bareilles made her debut on Broadway with Waitress in 2015, earning a Tony nomination for her score before going in to the lead the cast on stage and in a filmed performance.
