Mystery Protestors Demand ‘Stop the Arts’ at UK Theatres
A mysterious group is making waves across the UK theatre scene, but not in the way you’d expect.
Draped in purple hoods, this enigmatic bunch is staging protests with a peculiar demand: to ‘Stop the Arts’.
Their message is clear – and baffling. They claim that ‘art is complete’, and they’ve been making themselves heard at some of the UK’s most iconic cultural venues, including London’s Globe Theatre.
Armed with banners emblazoned with ‘Stop The Arts’ and videos shared to their Instagram following of just 60 people, the group is drawing attention for all the wrong reasons.
In a statement to WhatsOnStage, the group declared: “Enough is enough. Art is complete. Everything that can be done, has been done.”
They went on to detail their recent stunts: “On Friday we stopped theatre at The Globe. On Thursday 15 August we stopped visual art at The Ikon Gallery. On Saturday 24th August we stopped opera at the Birmingham Hippodrome.”
But they aren’t stopping there. “We will not hesitate to stop the arts again without warning at a time of our choosing. Where will we strike next? Stop The Arts, now.”
While The Globe Theatre has reported minimal disruption, the group’s antics have sparked confusion and speculation among theatre-goers and the wider arts community.
Is this some sort of performance art or an elaborate prank?
No one seems to know for sure.
Their next move is a mystery, but the group has announced plans for a virtual press conference, so we might soon have some answers—or at least, more questions.
