Rent fans and musical theatre devotees have big news to mark their calendars for in 2026.
The Jonathan Larson Project, a heartfelt tribute to the iconic composer behind Rent and tick, tick… BOOM!, is officially set for its UK debut at Southwark Playhouse Borough.
Running for a limited six-week engagement from July 9 to August 22, this event marks the 30th anniversary of Jonathan’s passing.
Following a celebrated 16-week Off-Broadway stint, the show is making its return with original director John Simpkins at the helm.
The project, conceived by Jennifer Ashley Tepper, unwraps previously unheard gems and early experiments from Jonathan’s songbook, offering a rare glimpse into his restless creativity and activist drive.
His family shared,:”We are delighted to have the opportunity to bring Jonathan’s lesser-known music to a British audience. His spirit is very much alive in all these songs and, although written long ago, the work remains more relevant now than ever.”
Producers Thomas Hopkins and SAMS Entertainment highlighted the unique sense of discovery behind the show.
Calling it an “honor to be entrusted with Jonathan’s legacy by Julie and the Larson family,” they credited John and Jennifer with uncovering a “worldwide event” inspired by long-lost cassette tapes, scripts, and personal mementos from Jonathan’s archives.
