Tim Minchin’s Wild Idea for a Jesus Christ Superstar Sequel

Tim Minchin has once again proven that his imagination knows no bounds.

The witty composer behind musical hits like Matilda and Groundhog Day has teased that he’d love to write a sequel to Jesus Christ Superstar, exploring what happens after the gospels.

During an appearance on Radio X in the UK, Tim couldn’t resist sharing his humorous take on what his next big project might be.

Tim, who starred in Jesus Christ Superstar’s 2012 arena tour, said: “I really want to write a new musical. But I need your ideas.”

He went on to confess that finding the perfect story is no easy task.

“I very rarely come across a story or a property, as they say, a book or a movie where I think, ‘Yeah, that has to be a musical’,” he admitted.

Then came the kicker.

Tim mused, “I wondered about Jesus Christ Superstar 2. Like, the aftermath.”

He painted quite a picture, imagining a world where both Judas and Jesus are gone, leaving Saul of Tarsus, the man who would become Paul, to spread the word.

“He’s a pretty interesting cat, Saul of Tarsus, who became Paul on the road to Damascus,” Tim noted.

“And I mean, ‘road to Damascus’ in itself is a lyric, isn’t it?”

Tim even joked that Lin-Manuel Miranda, the genius behind Hamilton, should be the one to bring this idea to life.

Although if anyone could turn a sequel to Jesus Christ Superstar into a must-see musical, it’s Tim Minchin.

But for now, it seems we’ll just have to wait and see if this tongue-in-cheek idea turns into a reality.
