This revival, directed by Maria Friedman, became one of Broadway’s biggest success stories, earning four Tony Awards including Best Leading Actor for Groff and Featured Actor for Radcliffe.

It marked a major comeback for a musical that originally ran for just 16 performances in 1981.

The show tracks the lives of three friends navigating the entertainment world across 30 years—told in reverse. Sondheim’s score features fan-favorite numbers like “Not a Day Goes By,” “Franklin Shepard, Inc.,” and “Old Friends.”

A separate feature film adaptation of the movie is also underway from director Richard Linklater.

It is being filmed over 20 years and stars Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein, with production expected to last until 2039.
