Wicked fans, get ready to pack your bags for another trip to Oz.
Universal has confirmed it’s exploring sequels and spin-offs that would expand the world of the blockbuster Broadway and West End hit.
The scoop comes hot from a Vulture interview with Michael Moses, Universal’s chief marketing officer, who explained, “Because of Wicked’s success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe.
“Have we figured it out yet? No. But there are things underway.”
Composer Stephen Schwartz added his take in an interview with The Ankler, pointing out, “I think the Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete — but there are other aspects that could be explored.”
The universe of Wicked is primed for expansion.
Gregory Maguire’s Oz novels, the source material for the musical, are loaded with characters and subplots waiting for their chance in the spotlight – including a recently announced Galinda prequel.
Meanwhile, Wicked: For Good, featuring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater and Marissa Bode, is enjoying a spectacular run in theaters, smashing box office records around the world.
Oz fans can rest easy knowing that while exact sequel plans are still under wraps, Universal’s broomsticks are already in motion.
