Les Misérables just celebrated its landmark 40th anniversary with a star-studded performance that was truly larger than life.
This year’s Royal Variety Performance saw more than 400 performers join forces for a powerful rendition of One Day More.
We were treated to the onstage return of Michael Ball, who originated the role of Marius back in the show’s first London production.
The performance saw an inspired gathering of talent, including 11 amateur theatre groups from across the UK, drummers from Guildhall Young Artists, the French company from Théâtre du Châtelet, the West End cast, plus several special guests.
Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo’s iconic novel, has become a global sensation, with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer.
The musical’s creative team includes Alain Boublil, Jean-Marc Natel, James Fenton, Trevor Nunn and John Caird.
The show remains a staple at London’s Sondheim Theatre, where it is the longest running musical in the West End with more than 15,000 performances.
